District Court grants restraining order against Apple

In the first ruling of the Epic vs. Apple legal battle, the Northern California District Court noted that Epic’s woes with respect to its games – aka Fortnite – are self-inflicted and Apple does not need to reinstate Fortnite. Why, you ask? Because for the time being, Epic can simply follow comply with Apple’s rules and remove the alternative payment methods from the game to make it available again. 

However, the story changes when the court considers the Unreal Engine and its related software tools:

In the end, the court granted a restraining order against Apple, preventing the company from “taking adverse action against Epic Games with respect to restricting, suspending, or terminating any affiliate of Epic Games…from Apple’s Developer Program”.

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War removes Tiananmen Square riot footage from trailer

After China blocked a trailer for Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War due to about a second’s worth of scenes showing riots from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, Activision Blizzard has re-upped a new, shorter trailer that conveniently removes the scenes in question.

Coincidence? Maybe, until you take note that the older trailer is no longer available.

Unity powers more than 50% of top 1000 PC/mobile/console games, according to S-1

A few days ago Unity filed a Form S-1 in anticipation of their IPO [initial public offering]. Normally, S-1s are filled with juicy details on how a company plans to use funds, provide a balance sheet and disclose competition and anything else that might have an adverse effect on the business, and Unity’s is no different.

But the juiciest tidbit is just how much of a hold Unity has on game development: the company estimated that 53% of the top 1000 mobile (ios + Android) games and over 50% of the top 1000 PC/console/mobile games were created in Unity. That’s pretty insane.

Street Fighter V tournament commentators spam fart noises during final match

Round 1…Fart! While I would never consider a Reddit community-led tournament to be a beacon of professionalism, commentators in yesterday’s finals match (Dee Ancer vs. FGC Jesus) may have crossed a line by constantly playing fake fart noises during the broadcast.

Tournament organizer Joe Munday later apologized on Twitter.
